Kahramanmaraş Flavors During Eid al-Adha

Eid is a special time when loved ones come together, and everyone spends these beautiful days with those closest to them.

In Kahramanmaraş, Eid is even more special. It remains one of the rare places where family visits are still common, and holiday vacations are not seen as an opportunity to travel far away alone or with just the immediate family.

On the first day of Eid al-Adha, everyone is busy with the sacrifice process until noon. Right after, a meal of fresh meat is shared with friends, followed by a family gathering in the evening at the home of an elder. The remaining three days are spent visiting relatives, starting with the eldest, and enjoying pleasant conversations.

Perhaps this is one of the reasons why almost everyone in Kahramanmaraş knows each other.

Whether it's Eid al-Adha, Ramadan, or just an ordinary visit, gatherings in Kahramanmaraş always include local delicacies. Tarhana is a staple, and depending on the season, treats like samsa, sucuk (spiced dried sausage), bastık (fruit pulp), butter cookies, Maraş çöreği (local pastry), pestil (dried fruit roll-up), tarhana firiği (crunchy tarhana), fresh pistachios, kadayıf, kıvrım, and baklava are indispensable offerings.

Of course, no Eid is complete without sweets. In Kahramanmaraş, traditional confections are enriched with unique local flavors. Maraş delight, pistachio paste, and almond candies are among the city's signature treats.

Kahramanmaraş tarhana is never served alone; it is always accompanied by a strong, well-brewed tea and either almonds or walnuts. Speaking of walnuts, Bertiz Highland is renowned for its small yet flavorful walnuts, which, when paired with tarhana, create an unforgettable taste experience.

This Eid, our visits were just like this. With the permission of our hosts, we took a few photos and wanted to share them with you.
